About Healthy Schools

The National Healthy Schools Programme

The National Healthy Schools Programme is an exciting long term initiative that helps young people and their schools to be healthy.

The Programme isn't just about physical health, it's about good health and happiness inside and out.

And it's not just about pupils either; a Healthy School involves the whole school community - from parents to governors to school staff - in improving their health and their happiness and getting the most out of life.

Healthy Schools Status provides rigorous evidence for schools to use to demonstrate how they are meeting the five national outcomes of Every Child Matters. It will also be a major contributor in helping schools to identify the Pupil Wellbeing Indicators being developed by Ofsted for introduction in September 2009.

The Cornwall Healthy Schools Programme is the local programme providing support, training, resources and guidance for all schools and PRUs in Cornwall.

A Healthy School is...

One that is successful in helping pupils to do their best and build on their achievements. It is committed to ongoing improvement and development. It promotes physical and emotional health by providing accessible and relevant information and equipping pupils and staff with the skills and attitudes to make informed decisions about their health.

A healthy school understands the importance of investing in health to assist in the process of raising pupils' achievement levels and improving standards. It also recognises the need to provide a physical and social environment conducive to work and learning.
