Outcomes
Healthy Eating

Qualitative outcomes from schools in Cornwall:

  • Following our focus on health during science week in summer 2007, staff report that the children continue to demonstrate an improved understanding of the importance of healthy eating and hydration and to make informed choices about their food consumption.
  • In summer 2007 we began to print healthy lunch box ideas on the back of our newsletters. Since we have done this, lunchtime supervisors have noticed an increase in healthier lunches among the children.
  • Following consultation with the school forum in June 2007, music is played in the dining hall and lunchtime supervisors report a calmer atmosphere.
  • As a result of the change to the school menu requested by the school council in summer 2007, the canteen report that the three menu choices available offer a balanced, nutritional meal. Our OfSTED report of Sept 2007 said the children “..have a good understanding of the need for Healthy Eating” (Grade 2).
  • The School Council were directly involved in the choice of the new school caterers. Council members attended a “pitches” interview day with members of the SLT and governors and made full contributions to the interviews and follow-up discussions leading to the final decision. Since the new caterers took over the contract, the canteen environment has been significantly enhanced with new furniture, engaging posters, bright signage and plasma screens showing news channels and MTV. Students and staff report that the canteen is now a much nicer place to socialize and eat, both at break-time and lunchtime. The incidence of poor behaviour and litter has also decreased. (Secondary school.)
  • A School Council survey undertaken in January 2007 and again in November 2007 showed that, since our Healthy Eating Week in September 2007, children are better able to say what healthy eating means.
  • The school council (see the minutes of the September 2007 meeting) suggested a rota for dining order. This was implemented and staff report that the children feel that the system is much fairer.
