Outcomes
Healthy eating

Quantitative outcomes from schools in Cornwall:

  • Further to mealtime supervisors' increased emphasis on positive reinforcement in the dining hall, behaviour has improved: 33 golden tickets were awarded during the week of 15th September 2008, compared with a total of 57 for the entire autumn term during 2007.
  • Since the school began to provide free water bottles to all children for use throughout the school day in September 2005, 87% of children say that they are drinking healthy drinks. (Water bottles are replaced at no cost to the children's families.)
  • In January 2008 staff were encouraged to eat in the dining hall. Since then there has been a drop in reported incidents, from 30 during the autumn term 2007 to 10 during the spring term 2008.
  • The new three-choice healthy menu was introduced in 2007. Since then there has been a 10% increase in the number of children eating school dinners. Backing this up, our recent survey shows that 96% of children state that the school promotes healthy eating.
  • The lunchtime arrangements were reviewed and the lunchtime period was increased from 40 to 55 minutes in order to ensure that both staff and students have sufficient time to eat their meals. This, along with the revised queuing arrangements, has ensured that 100% of pupils and staff are able to finish their meal comfortably before the end of the lunch period. There have been no complaints about the new arrangements.
