Outcomes
Physical activity

Qualitative outcomes from schools in Cornwall:

  • Since the introduction of Wake Up Shake Up in September 2007, staff report that children are more energised and focussed at the start of lessons.
  • Since we introduced taster sessions with visiting coaches for children to try new sports, parents and staff have noticed increased participation in extra-curricular activities, particularly among those children who were not previously physically active.
  • Since the introduction, in May 2008, of Fun Fit in the mornings, staff report that children who take part are settling better in the classroom and showing increased co-ordination. (See SENCO report on Fun Fit).
  • Following a survey of students by the SSCO in September 2007, alternative activities have been introduced during PE lessons (including golf, weight training and rowing), and holiday and out-of-school activities (both traditional and non-traditional activities including rock climbing and octopush). PE staff report that students are engaging with these and are therefore taking part in physical activity much more frequently.
  • Following the introduction of Wake Up Shake Up in September 2007, we entered a team, which included a child with a statement of special needs, in the Wake Up Shake Up competition. We came second. At the Year 6 leavers' assembly the child referred to this as one of their best school memories.
