The Healthy Schools enhancement model is here!

In order to address new national and local drivers around children's and young people's health and wellbeing and to link to policy developments and inspection requirements in schools (the new SEF and Ofsted's Pupil Wellbeing Indicators), the process for maintaining National Healthy School Status (NHSS) has changed.

The Healthy Schools enhancement model provides both a universal and a targeted approach to pupil wellbeing by building on the foundations of the current Healthy School standard (maintained using an Annual Review centred on the Whole School Approach) and by offering schools the challenge of meeting specific needs-led healthier behaviour outcomes.

The Healthy Schools enhancement model will have a profound effect on the way schools help improve the health and wellbeing of their pupils and will cement our links with extended schools.

Because of the work of our programme, the success of our schools and our trailblazing work in developing and implementing Healthy Schools Plus, Cornwall Healthy Schools has been working closely with Healthy Schools nationally on the development of the enhancement model. At all times during its development the needs of schools have been placed at the heart of the process and here in Cornwall we firmly believe that the changes are, for schools, a natural extension of achievement to date.

The changes are being brought in gradually. Those schools that achieved NHSS in 2006 have been the first to be invited to become part of the Healthy Schools enhancement model and have been given plenty of time to do so, see transition to the Healthy Schools enhancement model for more information.

Schools who don't yet have NHSS will continue to work towards validation.

The latest information can be seen on the national Healthy Schools website, just click on the national logo to the left.

We're offering meetings for schools to introduce the changes and tell you how we can support you, see our training pages for details.

In the meantime, if you'd like to chat to Kate or any of the team about the new model, please contact us or telephone 01209 310061.
