Healthy Schools Plus

Healthy Schools Plus is a ground-breaking initiative to bring about healthier behaviour amongst children and young people in the South West.

It supports local health and education partnerships to develop strategies that will achieve measurable improvements in health and wellbeing.

The south west region has already been tremendously successful in implementing the National Healthy Schools Programme and demonstrating that schools fully recognise the impact that health has on behaviour, attainment and attendance.

Healthy Schools Plus is available to those schools that have achieved National Healthy School Status, giving them the opportunity to build upon this firm foundation and tackle some of the most pressing health issues.

The aim is to provide targeted support for schools where health needs are greatest in the first instance, with the intention of reducing health inequalities.

Healthy Schools Plus has already strongly influenced the future direction of the national programme and the Healthy Schools enhancement model.

Healthy Schools Plus aims to:

  • identify and address local health priorities
  • ensure that health and wellbeing are key areas of school improvement
  • prioritise the most disadvantaged children and young people
  • support schools to encourage children and young people to embrace healthier behaviour
  • build on the success of the national Healthy Schools programme
  • help schools identify and tackle their key health priorities
  • work closely with parents, carers and the wider community to bring about healthier behaviours
