Headline projects
These suggestions for Healthy Schools Plus projects stem from the good practice emerging from work carried out by schools in the pilot
SRE
Work towards reducing unintended teenage pregnancy by using Speakeasy with your parents and carers and the Christopher Winter Project within your PSHEe. Here is an Example outline action plan for using CWP and Speakeasy as a Healthy Schools Plus project.
Healthy weight
Work towards tackling obesity by encouraging pupils and their families to eat more healthily and increase their physical activity. The FIT programme is ideal for this. Example outline action plan for using FIT as a Healthy Schools Plus project. And use some of the excellent Change4Life resources, both in school and at after-school activities involving families.
Mental health and emotional wellbeing
Work towards improving pupils' self-esteem, emotional health and wellbeing by implementing R Time throughout the primary school (or using Negotiate in secondary settings); adopt the R Time rules as your school's Golden Rules. Kate created this Example outline action plan for using RTime as a Healthy Schools Plus project; schools are finding it really helpful. Here are some more questions to help your action planning, R Time for Healthy Schools Plus.
In the secondary setting, work towards improving targetted pupils' self-esteem by involving them as peer-mentors (as reported at our first secondary sector half-day workshop).
Those schools that are already involved in TaMHS can use some of this work as a Healthy Schools Plus project, read more about TaMHS.
Reducing misuse of drugs
For primary schools, we recommend the Christopher Winter Project's new drugs education resource.
Sun safety
Work towards reducing the incidence of melanoma in Cornwall by engaging with Caroline Chapman of Sun Safe in Cornwall to develop and evaluate a sun-safe intervention for your pupils and their families.
