Food for Life in Cornwall
We are delighted that so many schools in Cornwall are working with the Food for Life Partnership and are committed to transforming their food culture, from growing and cooking to improving packed lunches and school meals.
As well as inviting schools to take part in the award scheme the Food for Life Partnership are working with Flagship Schools, models of best practice for schools in Cornwall. What do you need to be a Flagship School? Bags of enthusiasm!
Benefits of becoming a Flagship School:
- Financial support and expertise to improve your school's food culture
- Help to improve your school's organic garden
- Support to develop your school's cooking
- Cooking bus at your school for a week
- Help to develop farm links
- Support to consult with the local community about food
- Support to develop the school dining room and kitchen (including a day of Jeanette Orry's help)
- Financial assistance where necessary
We think that working with Food for Life will help schools meet and exceed the criteria in the Annual Audit and will also be perfect for those schools taking part in Healthy Schools Plus.

Evaluation
Researchers at the University of the West of England have carried out work to evaluate the effectiveness of Food for Life. The research looks at the takeup of school meals, pupils' experiental food education, their awareness of food sustainability, their healthy eating, pupils' food habits at home, school performance, sustainable sourcing for the provision of school meals and the whole-school approach to food. The evaluation included a cross-sectional study with 111 Flagship schools at the point of enrolment (baseline) and again after approximately 18-24 months (follow up). Sub-samples of the schools were also asked to participate in pupil and parental questionnaire survey work. Case study work with teachers, parents and children is reported separately, as is work with caterers and their supply chains. Read Food for Life partnership evaluation: summary report and see the UWE's website for the additional reports.
