Heartstart and your Healthy Schools work

ELS skills support your Healthy Schools work

The Heartstart programme can be taught in school as a complete course or split as a staged programme across year groups, starting at the age of five.  ELS skills can fit into your school curriculum (PSHEe, Science, PE) or the programme can be run as an extra-curricular activity.  Affiliation to the Heartstart UK Schools Programme is free and you will be provided with the appropriate resources to run Heartstart within your school.  Staff who are to run the programme need to receive training to ensure that their skills are up to date.  This training is free of charge and, once affiliated, schools can claim supply cover for up to four members of staff to attend.

We have created an outline action plan for using Heartstart as your HS Plus focus - contact us for more help in planning the work.

Peer-mentoring, self-esteem work and engaging families

Some secondary schools have done good peer-mentoring and self-esteem work using Heartstart. Older pupils, once trained, are able to teach younger ones. Parents can be offered a two-hour Heartstart course covering all the key skills and we are linking to this in our FIT Cornwall (Families In It Together) work.

Here are some photos from a recent Heartstart course held for young people in Cornwall:
