This guidance was produced by the (then) DfES with the Department of Health: Managing medicines in schools and early years settings.  

Education and early years health training awareness

For information in regard to pupils with health issues such as Diabetes, Asthma, Anaphylaxis and Epilepsy please refer to the Schools Messenger service for health information about the conditions and where to access training, advice and support.

Due to education staff feedback- the group Medicines Management booking sessions have now been discontinued.

Diabetes awareness document for schools 

Download this Diabetes awareness document which covers everything a school needs to know to support pupils with diabetes.

Asthma policy for schools and pre-schools

Download this policy document which gives schools clear guidance on supporting children with asthma and also provides a format to follow should a child have an acute asthma attack: Asthma: the care of pupils and students in schools and preschool settings in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Infection control in schools

The Health Protection Agency issued this Guidance on infection control in schools and other childcare settings, April 2010. In the form of a poster, this document gives guidance on the most common infectious diseases and the recommended periods for which children should be kept away from school or nursery. The Health Protection Agency has a page on handwashing where you can download some of the resources from the Hands Up for Max pack to teach handwashing in primary schools. Endorsed by the Health Protection Agency, e-Bug is a place to play games and learn about microbes. The websiste has a series of teaching resources, educational materials and games on topics associated with microbes and the spread, treatment and prevention of infection.

The Spotty Book

The Health Protection Unit (South West Peninsula) published The Spotty Book which provides general guidance for schoolteachers and others with children in their care about the prevention and control of infectious diseases. The advice applies to schools, nurseries, playgroups and childminders. Download The Spotty Book.

Say no to Norovirus and suggested letter for schools

The NHS in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly produced a leaflet giving information and advice about Norovirus, Say no to Norovirus. The Health Protection Agency also produced a suggested advisory letter to parents reminding them about good hygiene, download the letter.
