Resources for secondary schools

QCDA guidance

This guidance was published in 2005 by the (then) QCA, now the QCDA:

The Home Office, DfES and DoH produced Understanding drugs: drug education pack for schools - KS 3 in 2006. It contains two booklets for teachers, a pupils' booklet and a CD ROM.

Drugscope

Drugscope has published a poster, What drugs look like, showing the main misused drugs, together with drug paraphernalia and each drug's classification under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Drugsearch is a web-based encyclopaedia of drugs, their history, their effects and the law. Drugscope has made the same information available as a D-Rom multimedia drug encyclopaedia; this version also includes a Super-Mario style game together with teacher and student resources.

DELTA: Drug Education Learning and Training Activities

Delta 1, for 11-14 year-olds, is a pack containing information and worksheets about drugs, the law, ideas for additional learning activities and ideas for children and young people to carry out their own research, see the Drugscope catalogue.

Delta 2, for 14-18 year-olds, is a pack containing activities to enable young people to gain information about drugs and drug use, to clarify and share attitudes, and to develop skills and confidence for managing drug-related situations, see the Drugscope catalogue.

Tacade

Tacade produces some useful resources including ASK (Attitudes, Skills development, Knowledge and understanding) alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. The ASK materials are intended for use with students aged eleven to fourteen, with a particular emphasis on the more vulnerable and at-risk groups. The trigger sheets are intended to enhance current curriculum provision and may be integrated easily into ongoing work using a variety of teaching and learning styles, download a sample.

Also from Tacade, Sex, drugs and alcohol is an interactive resource for young people aged 14-19, particularly those with low levels of literacy. It can be used in schools, colleges, informal youth settings, with young people in care and with young people involved in the criminal justice system. It contains fifteen core activities (plus extension activities) and twenty-five cartoon style illustrations showing situations common to young people, as well as background papers and support information for teachers or facilitators. Based on the outcomes of successful projects, Tacade has developed a peer alcohol education toolkit. It includes background information, case studies, practical tools and activities for use with students. Download a sample from Tacade's Peer alcohol education toolkit.
