Emotional health and wellbeing is important in its own right. Children and young people's emotional, psychological and social states affect their ability to learn and can also impact on their physical health. Schools can play a key role in helping children and young people (including those who are identified as needing extra support) to build emotional resilience, enabling them to deal with their emotions and understand how to treat other people, which in turn helps them to react to stressful situations more effectively.

Resilience and Self-Esteem Toolkit (ReSET)

We have developed our ReSET resources for schools around emotional health and wellbeing and we now have three main primary resources and several, more specialist, secondary packs. The information and resources in this toolkit form an ideal basis for a Healthy Schools Plus project on emotional health and wellbeing and include suitable assessment tools that give you the valuable evidence of the impact of your work that you need for your reporting. We also have an example ReSET Action Plan to give you more ideas.

Data tools 

Schools doing the TaMHS project have been given access to the PASS (Pupil Attitude to Self and School) survey. In those TaMHS schools that are also doing Healthy Schools Plus the PASS data is used as baseline data and subsequent use of PASS will measure improvement.

Other questionnaires in use in schools include the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale.

Kate is looking into the work of Dr Robin Banerjee on the Children's Social Behaviour Project and on sociograms with a view to applying it to evaluating the effectiveness of interventions in emotional health and wellbeing, read more about sociograms.

R Time 

We have also made R Time work in the primary school a suggested project for schools in Cohort 2, based on the excellent experiences and best practice of schools in Cohort 1. If your school is doing this, we've compiled this list of prompts to help you with your action planning.

Other resources

Making it mainstream. This booklet aims to provide a brief resource for secondary school staff who are interested in developing sustainable in-school support for pupils with mental health problems, particularly depression. It brings together information from the policy context, the research field and the practice-learning context.

From the Samaritans, the DEAL programme helps schools to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes that young people need to cope with the challenges in life and look after their emotional health and wellbeing. It aims to promote emotional health among young people aged 14-16.

Young Minds is the UK's leading charity committed to improving the emotional wellbeing and mental health of children and young people and empowering their parents and carers. The comprehensive website includes information about the Young Minds schools outreach service which helps raise awareness of children's and adolescents' mental health issues in schools and community organisations. The Young Minds charity also operates a telephone helpline.

NHS Dorset put together this helpful website Where's your head at? which has a kids zone, and sections for teenagers, parents and carers, and professionals.

Use and effectiveness of anti-bullying strategies

The Unit for School and Family Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London, was commissioned by the Department for Education to carry out research into the use and effectiveness of anti-bullying strategies in schools. The research explored the strategies and interventions that schools use to deal with episodes of bullying, how these are chosen and how effective they are.
