Great news for SRE and PSHE
7 Nov 2008
The long awaited government review of SRE has come up with the 'gift' that every HS programme in the country has asked santa for, for a very long time!!!
The review concludes that effective SRE is crucial to the well-being of pupils and that the best way to help deliver it is via a compulsory PSHE curriculum in schools. At last!
We are very conscious of the potential impact schools may feel it will have on an already overcrowded curriculum BUT we are sure that the next phase of the review (to see HOW it can be accomodated) will be sensitive to schools' needs!
However we want to celebrate the news and more importantly tell you how the Cornwall Healthy Schools Team can and will help you now and when the changes come in...
We have an extensive resource library of PSHE / SRE resources;
we have just developed a set of comprehensive guidelines for schools on all aspects of SRE policy (our work is given as good practice on the Sex Education Forum website)and practice including work with parents and carers; (including our fab Speakeasy work which was used in Jim Knight's review as an example of BEST practice; auditing your PSHE and much more;
Healthy Schools Plus offering innovative work / training to support the development of SRE / PSHE including funding of up to £1750 per school...
The guidelines will be distributed to all schools via HS coordinators and an interactive version will be published on our website in the run up to Christmas. We will also be launching the guidance and our support programme for developing SRE in schools early in the new year featuring good practice and case studies from schools doing great work in County already.
Please contact us if you would like any further information about the recommendations in the review / guidance etc.
Copies of the review recommendations and the government repsonse can be downloaded from our website.
