Teaching Drug and Alcohol Education with Confidence
Having used CWP's superb RSE resources for some time we know just how good their materials are. So we were delighted to be asked to pilot Teaching Drug and Alcohol Education with Confidence in Primary School when it was first developed
This resource encourages children to develop the skills of resisting peer pressure, resilience, empathy, self awareness and assertiveness.
From Year 1 they will learn about health and personal safety with a focus on medicines and substances found in most homes. Years 3 and 4 cover smoking and alcohol. This includes understanding why people use these legal drugs, the effects they have on our bodies and how to resist use. From Year 5 onwards the children will focus on legal and illegal substances, with an emphasis on the drugs most commonly used by early teenagers.
Lessons are designed to be adapted depending on the degree of knowledge each class has about drugs. All schemes of work include a focus on recognising unsafe and risky situations and developing the skills to ask for help.
Growing up in a society where a variety of drugs are widely used, alcohol is consumed by a majority of adults and tobacco can be purchased legally by anyone over 18, despite the well documented health risks, young people are faced with a number of drug related choices.
These choices are complicated by the fact that young people are surrounded by media images of drug use, often glamorising the use of certain drugs or of getting drunk.
Delivering this comprehensive teaching pack will increase young people’s knowledge and understanding of the effects of drugs and alcohol and develop their social skills and attitudes. It includes a range of active learning materials which focus on the relationships young people have with friends, peers and family and how these relationships can be affected by their own or others’ drug and alcohol use.
Trialled by secondary school teachers, these materials are engaging and age appropriate.
