The Cornwall Healthy School Award

The Cornwall Healthy Schools Award Framework aims to support schools across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to raise attainment and achievement by offering school settings an accessible and holistic health and wellbeing award framework to work toward.

Our work on 'Food in Schools' encompasses everything that surrounds food and food culture within the school environment.

We can work with you to help improve school meals and increase uptake; we offer courses / resources on cooking and growing skills in the classroom and beyond (including work with parents) and help you work towards a Food in Schools Awards. Our partners include community chefs, Cornwall Food Foundation, Jamie's Kitchen Garden Project and school caterers.

PSHE provides pupils with the knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes to make informed decisions about their lives.

PSHE is a vital part of supporting resilience by helping students recognise and manage risky behaviours, and includes:

  • relationships and sex education
  • drug education (including alcohol, tobacco and volatile substance abuse)
  • emotional health and wellbeing, and mental health
  • safety (including online safety, personal safety and bullying)
  • healthier lifestyles

We can work with you to help build pupil voice across the school through our support for school staff around promoting school councils, and help celebrate your work via our Learner Participation Awards.

A whole school approach to wellbeing can be a powerful tool for school improvement and increased pupil attainment and achievement.

Our work is needs-led and focused on your key priorities for wellbeing across the whole school community. A focus on building resilience by supporting EHWB/PSHE in schools can help increase aspiration and achievement as well as help children and young people understand and manage risks linked to sexual health or drugs and alcohol, and help them adopt healthier lives.

Physical activity
For the first time in history the lack of physical activity in our lives means that this generation of children may have a life expectancy of 5 years less than that of their parents.

Physical activity

We are supporting the PE and School Support Strategy, 'Time to Move'. The strategy essentially focuses on the wellbeing of students and how it can be supported through the implementation of PE in the school environment.

ALL of our training is FREE and available to ALL school staff in ALL schools in Cornwall!

Types of sessions:
Open: An open session is held at a council location for practitioners from a variety of schools to attend.
Closed: A closed session is held at an individual school, either as a twilight session or as part of an INSET day.

Please note that some of our training sessions only run as an open session or as a closed session.

Cornwall Healthy Schools is a health improvement programme designed to support schools to develop an ethos and environment that enhances learning, promotes the health and wellbeing, and consults and encourages participation of all within the school community.

Cornwall Healthy Schools is placed within Healthy Cornwall and is part of the Cornwall Council Wellbeing and Public Health Directorate. We therefore have a duty to improve the health and wellbeing of the county's population. The Cornwall Healthy Schools programme specifically seeks to improve the health and wellbeing across the education sector by working with and supporting schools on a 1 to 1 basis across the county.
