SUGAR SMART Progress 18/19
Schools in Cornwall are storming ahead with their mission to become SUGAR SMART, with 40 of 65 schools registering over this last academic year and 29 schools taking part in our SUGAR SMART awareness session! We are incredibly proud of how well all these schools have done in progressing Cornwall’s SUGAR SMART ambitions.
Becoming SUGAR SMART does not mean becoming sugar free! It is about having the awareness and skills to make informed decisions about the food and drink we choose to consume so we can be mindful of our sugar consumption.
You don’t have to take drastic steps to start your own SUGAR SMART campaign; several schools who have achieved their SS certificate exemplify this perfectly! Example actions include: increasing promotion of water consumption and reducing soft drinks; having healthy lunch and snack policies in place; offering fruit, vegetables, and other healthy snacks; reducing availability of unhealthy snacks; increasing healthy lunch options; holding SUGAR SMART assemblies; making a SUGAR SMART display; and using student voice to drive the campaign and engage the whole school community.
We would like to give a special congratulation to the following schools that have gone the extra mile to achieve their Healthy Schools SUGAR SMART certificate:
- Berrycoombe Primary School
- Burraton Community Primary School
- Cape Cornwall School
- King Charles Primary School
- Mithian School
- Polperro Primary Academy
- Richard Lander School
- Columb Major Academy
- Stephens (Saltash) Community Primary School
- Torpoint Nursery & Infant School
Healthy Schools would love for Cornwall’s schools to continue to add to the SUGAR SMART ambition in the start of the new academic year, and we would be delighted to support you in doing so. We are especially keen for secondary schools to take on the sweet stuff, and follow in the footsteps of Richard Lander School, who achieved their certificate this year.
If you have already registered for SUGAR SMART, make sure you logon to your online account to access free resources and record the actions you have done in school to contribute to your SUGAR SMART campaign.
